Multi-fuel / Bi-fuel / Dual-fuelFlexDI - Multi-fuel / Bi-fuel / Dual-fuel

Availability and variety of fuels in the future will mean that vehicles may need to use more than one fuel type. Vehicles may need to run on combinations of gaseous and liquid fuels or mixtures of liquid fuels. Some engines may need to use two separate fuels at the same time.

FlexDI can enable use of a variety of liquid fuels or mixtures of liquid fuels depending on what fuel is available. This is particularly important in remote regions where fuel supply is uncertain. One engine design can feasibly operate on all current liquid fuels with out any modification. FlexDI provides an ideal solution for applications that have a Multi Fuel requirement.

Due to the slow development of fuel distribution infrastructure some vehicles need to use both gaseous and liquid fuels to overcome availability problems. FlexDI offers the potential capability to seamlessly switch between fuels as required. Eventually only one fuel injection system may be required meaning cost can be reduced. FlexDI offers the best potential solution for Bi-Fuel engines.

FlexDI also offers the ability for advanced combustion control for metering and combining liquid and gaseous fuels simultaneously in the combustion chamber. Dual fuel direct injection may be a critical factor for HCCI combustion and may offer optimised combustion near to lean limits and control of stratified fuel preparation.

FlexDI offers:

  • Ultimate fuel flexibility for remote regions
  • Possibility to run engines on any liquid fuel or mixtures of liquid fuels (Multi Fuel)
  • Choice of liquid and gaseous fuels (Bi-Fuel)
  • Simultaneous direct injection of liquid and gaseous fuels (Dual-Fuel) possible
  • Advanced control for unique combustion requirements
  • Ultimately only one fuel injection system required
