Most people may not be able to answer the question, what are trans fatty acids? Trans refers to the arrangement of the carbon atoms. These kinds of fats are normally unsaturated and have trans-isomer fats. These types of fats can be polyunsaturated or monounsaturated.
When oils get reused from time to time through heating, they get converted to solid then to semi-solid and eventually to trans fatty acids (TFAs), through the hydrogenation process. It’s true that trans fats are dangerous to a person’s health. They play a major role in increasing bad cholesterol levels. People who normally consume these fats have greater risks of suffering from cardiovascular conditions. Many people who have died of heart related illnesses are found to have high bad cholesterol levels.
Trans fats can be linked to type 2 diabetes. Apart from this kind of diabetes, these fats lead to an increase in the abdominal fats. They also lead to weight gain and obesity. An enzyme called delta 6 desaturase is normally affected by these acids. They stop it from converting essential fats to prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are essential for proper functioning of the cells.
Nowadays, many packaged foods have a label written ‘no trans fat’. This means that people should always check the product labels before making purchases.TFAs are commonly found in fried foods, baked foods, pastries, biscuits, corn chips, French fries, doughnuts, margarine or even artificial cheese. The label ‘zero grams of trans fats’ is not always true.
People are often advised to avoid taking foodstuffs which come in boxes. Instead, individuals should concentrate on meals with high fiber content. The meals include brown rice, beans, grains, fruits and vegetables. Individuals should eat foods such as fish, eggs and lean meat.
